A Messiah of the Rastafarian movement was toppled .
* On this day in 1974, Emperor Haile Selassie 1 was deposed by a group of revolutionary soldiers that consequently ruled Ethiopia as the Derg until 1991. Selassie is often considered to be a Messiah by Rastafarians.
