    Today in history

Julius kambarage Nyerere, former President of Tanzanian. Anti-colonial activist, politician and political theorist. He governed Tanganyika as Prime Minister from 1961 to 1962 and then as president of the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar which metamorphus into present day Tanzania from 1964 to 1985. He was a founding member and chairman of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) Party, and of its successor Chama Cha Mapinduzi, from 1954 to 1990. Ideologically an African Nationalist and socialist.
He promoted a political philosophy known as UJAMAA.
Nyerere educational philosophy represented by UJAMAA is to make the citizens of Africa self reliant. Self reliance is portrayed in economics, politics and social cultures. A self reliant person does not exploit other and at same time, they are not exploitable.
The policy of TANU is to build a socialist state. The principle of socialism are laid down in the TANU constitution.
Whereas TANU believes as: (a) That all human beings are equal.
    (b) that every human being has a right to dignity and respect
The UJAMAA led to the Arusha declaration and in this sense, it was believed that Africans has a sense of collectivism which makes an African man’s visit to a friend that doesn’t stay without assisting his host.
If an ideal African man visits you, the first could be entertainment but the following day, no one will advice him when the host hangs his how on his way to the farm. He quickly fastens his belt follow the host to the farm. That’s the spirit of collectivism.
The programme was short-lived due the capitalist influence of the West. Who saw it as a policy that’s infiltrating from Eastern bloc of Europe. If allowed to thrive, can easily make Africa sway towards socialism as a means of production.
The frustrations encountered by the UJAMAA was visibly traced to that singular fact.
Meanwhile, the mechinaries that were purchased by Tanzania for massive food production was frustrated by the tactical inability to supply equipment and machineries including overhauling of the machineries bought from them.
The reason for the failure of UJAMAA.
