Isoko People of Niger Delta
The Isoko people are an ethnic group in southern Nigeria. They live in the Isoko region of Delta State and Bayelsa State. The Isoko are also referred to as Biotu, and Igabo by some of their neighbours.
The Isoko speak a language from the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo family. They are closely related to the neighboring Edo people.
The Isoko are made up of 19 clans and have a total population of about 2.1 million people. They have a traditional religion that includes:
Belief in a creator god and his messengers
Belief in spirits
Belief in ancestral spirits
The Isoko also have a typical marriage that consists of three steps:
First visit
Second visit
Paying of the pride price
The Isoko are distinct from their neighbors the Urhobo, but ethnographers use the term Sobo to cover both groups.
