Rita Marley, the widow of Bob Marley, was granted Ghanaian citizenship in 2013 for her many contributions to the country, including :
– Enhancing the educational system in Ghana through her Rita Marley Foundation
– Constructing and refurbishing school buildings
– Providing scholarships
– Renovating school buildings and providing meals for elementary school students
Rita Marley has lived in Ghana for over 20 years, and in 2019, she was also one of the 126 Africans in the diaspora to be given Ghanaian citizenship in honor of the “Year of Return,” a series of events commemorating the 400th anniversary of the first slave ship arriving in the United States.
