After the war in 1970, the contract for a quick reconnection of the destroyed bridge was awarded to Julius Berger.

Julius Berger was considered as they had done the Eko Bridge in Lagos in record time and with very quality to best international practice.

The destroyed Onitsha was reconnected by Julius Berger and opened to traffic in 7 weeks.
