• 1 year, 11 months agoFor me Americans got the right to demand democracy from any nation that does not respect democratic processes. Yesterday former President Donald Trump was arraigned in court for his role in trying to subvert the democratic will of American people in the 2020 American elections.
But here in Nigeria those who subverted the will of the people are rewarded and treated as heroes and heroines. They always get appointed as reward for rigging and engaging in anti-democratic electoral malfeasances. There are no sanctions. They know themselves.
I have always said consistently that when any nation is talking about democracy Nigeria should keep quiet. I concede that we have civilian regimes and we have been transiting from civilians to civilians since 1999. But in most cases the results of the elections are not democratic.
Those who are honest will not dispute this fact. Those who genuinely loved democracy cannot deny this basic truth. The political class themselves know the truth. The institution charged with ensuring we have democracy have been completely compromised. Anything goes in Nigeria.
What is the moral right of Nigeria to speak on democracy when in almost all the political parties internal democracy is zero. Parties imposed caretakers on members. Freedom to select and elect the best is absolutely not available. In democracy the rule of law is the bedrock.
Nigerians demand that true democracy be restored in Nigeria. In most of the states freedom to campaign by political opponents is zero. Democracy has been replaced with state terrorism. So when nations with democratic credentials talk, Nigeria should learn to keep quiet.
I will support Nigeria to talk about democracy if it put its house in order. Those who sabotaged the will of the people should be punished. Those who superintended the subversion of the will of the people must be punished. INEC needs to be disbanded and restructured
We cannot have a completely compromised electoral body and talked about democracy. Nigerian security institutions must extricate themselves from political slavery and give hopes to Nigerians of their independence and neutrality.
We need independent institutions.
Nigerians demand that our institutions including judiciary, armed forces, police and other security agencies be independent of political manipulations and influences. That is when Nigeria can speak boldly as a democratic nation.Anyone that goes to equity must go with clean hands. Nigeria cannot play a leading role and leadership in democratic restoration unless it can be seen to be democratic in truth and fact. #Love #RejiG
