In Russia, before refrigeration, milk was preserved fresh by placing live brown frogs in buckets. Later, scientist Albert Lebedev discovered that the skin of these frogs released antimicrobial compounds that helped keep the milk bacteria-free.

And refrigerator work by suspending microbial activities. The study of nature leads to majority of the inventions we see today.
