A 132-year-old message in a bottle was recently discovered in the wall of Corsewall Lighthouse in Scotland. Engineers, who were working on repairs at the lighthouse, unearthed the glass bottle, which contained a note dated September 4, 1892. The note was written by the workers who had installed a new lens and lantern at the lighthouse.
The message listed the names of the engineers, millwrights, and laborers involved in the project, and was sealed inside the bottle and placed in the wall after the work was completed. For over a century, the bottle remained hidden until recent repairs uncovered it. To the engineers who found it, the note was particularly striking—it described the same lens they were working on, making it feel like a message from the past directly addressing the present.
Here is part of the note: “This lantern was erected by James Wells, Engineer, John Westwood, Millwright, James Brodie, Engineer, David Scott, Labourer … and relighted on Thursday night 15th Sept. 1892.”
