On August 26, 1944 the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroon (NCNC) was formed by Herbert Macaulay who became first president, while Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was its first Secretary. The name was later changed from National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroon to National Convention of Nigerian Citizens, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe later became its 2nd president, after the death of Herbert Macaulay on May 7, 1946, he lasted in office until when he became the first indigenous President of Nigeria on October 1, 1963, and Dr. M.I. Okpara took over and lasted until the party was banned on January 16, 1966 following the military coup.
On March 21, 1951 the Action Group (AG) political party, was formed and was led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo as a platform for realizing his preliminary objective of mobilizing Western Nigerians politically
Following the introduction of the Lyttleton Constitution on October 1, 1954, the regions were enabled to make their own laws. With the subsequent election that was held Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, leader of the NPC, became Premier of North Region. Chief Obafemi Awolowo, leader of AG, became Premier of West Region and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, leader of NCNC, became Premier of East Region. In 1959, the Federal elections to enlarge the House of Representatives was held and the result was as follows:
NPC – 148 seats
NCNC-NEPU Alliance – 89
AG and allies – 75.
When the regional elections were held the AG took control Western House of Assembly, the NCNC won the Eastern House of Assembly. The NPC gain control of Northern House of Assembly.
